SS-31 (elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeted peptide that binds selectively to cardiolipin within the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilizing mitochondrial structure and supporting efficient electron transport (Chavez et al. 2020; Zhu et al. 2022). Research has shown that SS-31 preserves mitochondrial integrity, reduces oxidative stress, and maintains cellular architecture in aged tissue models (Sweetwyne et al. 2017). These findings highlight its utility as a tool for investigating mitochondrial structure–function relationships under conditions of cellular stress or aging.
